The Indus is one of the few rivers in the world to exhibit a tidal bore. TheIndus system is largely fed by the snows and glaciers of the Himalayas, Karakoram and the Hindu Kush ranges of Tibet, the Indian states of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh and Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

The Indus river, popularly known as Sindhu in Sanskrit, is the westernmost river system in the Indian Subcontinent. The Indus river along with its numerous tributaries forms one ef the largest drainage systems in the world. The Indus valley has been the cradle of one of the oldest civilisations in the world, i.e., the Indus Valley Civilisation.

The Indus river originates from a glacier in the Kailas Range near the Mansarovar Lake in western Tibet. This place is more than 5000 m above the mean sea level. From its place Indus river flows in the north-west direction in the Trans-Himalayan region. a cror enters India in the Ladakh district of Jammu and Kashmir state.

The Indus river flows in the same north-west direction between the Ladakh and Zaskar mauntain ranges and forms a beautiful gorge near Gilgit in the Jammu and Kashmir state, Hare the Indus river flows around the town of Leh and is joined by the Zaskar river. The ivers which join the Indus in the Kashmir region are the Nubra, the Shyok and the Hunza. Along the left bank, the Suru and the Dras rivers join the Indus near Kargil.

After flowing through Baltistan and Gilgit, the Indus river takes a sharp southernly bend and reaches Attock in Pakistan. This is the end of its journey through the mountains and is joined by the Kabul river from Afghanistan. The Satluj, the Beas, the Ravi, the Chenab and the Jehlum rivers join together to meet the Indus river, just above Mithankot in Pakistan. These tributaries are along the east coast of Indus.

From Mithankot onwards, the Indus river flows southwards and finally falls into the Arabian Sea, east of Karachi city. It forms a big delta. The total length of the Indus river is about 2900 km, out of which about 700 km is in India. The total area of the Indus river basin S about 12 lakh sq. km. About one-third of the river basin area is in India and falls in the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab.

After the partition of India in 1947, the Indus river basin was divided between India id Fakistan. Under the Indus Water Treaty, signed by India and Pakistan in 1960, India r use only 20 per cent of the total water carried by the Indus river system. India got the exclusive right of three easternmost rivers (the Satluj, the Beas and the Ravi) of the Indus river system.
