Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from an isolated gaseous atom so as to convert it into a gaseous cation.
This process may be represented as :-
Mg + Ionization Energy (I.E.) ---------> (Mg^+)+ e^-.
It is also known as Ionization Potential size it is the minimum potential difference (in a discharge tube) required to remove an electron from an element only in its gaseous state to form it's gaseous cation. The cation so formed is smaller in size from the parent atom as number of electrons is less and number is protons is more.
Example:-
When from Sodium ( Electronic Config. 2,8,1) an electron is removed ab forms a cation Na^+ ,the number of electrons gets decreased to 10 from 11 but the number of protons remains 11. So the nuclear attraction is more ande hence the size gets smaller than the parent atom.
