According to Kinetic Theory of gases, gases consist of tiny molecules separated from one other by means of large gaps called voids. When the temperature of the gas is lowered, the volume and the kinetic energy also decrease. As a result the molecules become slow and start coming close to each other. As the temperature is further decreased , the molecules come nearer and nearer. At a sufficiently low temperature, the voids between the particles become less than 10-5cm and the gas converts into the liquid state. This effect causes a decrease in the volume of the gas.{This process is called Liquefaction of gas, as the process of bringing the gas molecules nearer can be done by increasing the pressure of the gas}.
