A landfill site (also known as a tip, dump, rubbish dump, garbage dump or dumping ground and historically as a midden) is a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial. It is the oldest form of waste treatment (although the burial part is modern; historically, refuse was just left in piles or thrown into pits).

used to dump rubbish, either directly on

the ground (landraising) or filling an

unwanted hole in the ground

(landfilling).

We need landfill sites to dispose of

rubbish that cannot be reused or

recycled. New technologies are being

developed to reduce the amount of

rubbish that is sent to landfill each year,

for instance Energy Recovery Facilities

(ERF) and composting
