The energy required to change the phase of a substance is known as a latent heat. The word latent means hidden. When the phase change is from solid to liquid we must use the latent heat of fusion, and when the phase change is from liquid to a gas, we must use the latent heat of vaporisation.

when a substance changes from one state of matter into another state of matter there is a absorption of the heat without significant increase in temperature. This is known as latent heat.

Explanation:

  • The latent heat is important because it helps to separate the particles of matter during the changing of one state into another.
  • In latent heat of fusion is the amount of heat observed when a solid changes into a liquid or vice versa without significant rise in temperature. On the other hand latent heat of vaporization is the amount of heat it is observed while a liquid changes into gaseous state without significant rise in temperature
