The law of conservation of linear momentum states that for an isolated system,the total momentum before collision is equal to the total momentum after collision.

This can be illustrated mathematically as under:

Consider two balls of masses m1 and m2 moving initially with velocities u1 and u2 m/s respectively,

Let the 2 balls collide during a time interval of t s and let v1 and v2 be their final velocities after collision.

In accordance with Newton’s 3rd law of motion:

Force on ball B due to A = -(Force on ball A due to B)

=> m2(v2 - u2)/ t = -(m1(v1-u1)/t (By Newton’s 2nd law, F = m(v-u)/t)

=> m2v2 - m2u2 = (-m1v1 + m1u1 ) (canceling t on both sides)

=> m2v2 + m1v1 = m1u1 + m2u2

This is the expression pertaining to law of conservation of momentum.
