Lateral inversion in a plane mirror (a flat mirror) means the apparent reversal of left and right in the mirror image compared with the object. Lateral means "sideways". In fact, the mirror image is really a reversal of the the object in the direction perpendicular to the mirror's surface (called the normal).

- Lateral inversion is a phenomenon in which left appears to be right and vice versa.
- It is due to direction that light follows when it strikes a reflecting surface, generally a mirror.
