LENS FORMULA. A lens formula may be defined as the formula which gives the relationship between the distance of image (v), distance of object (u), and the focal length (f) of the lens.

Lens formula

Lens formula goes like this :

1/f = 1/v - 1/u

where, f = focal length

u = position of object

v = position of image

Important things to remember

When the lens is convex ,

  • f is always positive
  • u is always negative
  • v is positive for real image and negative for virtual

When the lens is concave,

  • f is always negative
  • u is negative
  • v is negative

If you remember the signs you can easily do numericals

Best of luck :-)
