Lenz's law is named after HeinrichLenz, and it says: An induced electromotive force (emf) always gives rise to a current whose magnetic field opposes the change in original magnetic flux. ... The direction of the induced emf is always such as to result in opposition to the change producing it.

In electromagnetic induction the direction of induced EMF or current is such as oppose the change that produced it. This is based on the principle of conservation of energy.
