The idea of a particle accelerator is pretty simple. It is a machine that makes particles go very fast, and then smashes them together. In theory, there’s no more to it (in practise, particle accelerators are marvellous feats of engineering).
The reasonable question to ask would then be “Why do we want to smash particles together?” The reason for this is to study other particles. When you smash two particles together at high speeds, Einstein predicts that many many new particles will be created from the energy. And by looking at the particles that are created, we can figure out more stuff about the universe.
