Explain me when to take the negative and positive signs for image distance and object distance??

For a convex lens, the left Hand side of the lens is taken as negative. The right hand side is taken as positive.

For a concave lens, the left hand side is taken as positive. The right hand side of the lens is taken as negative

This is the usual notation used.
