Explanation:

Breathing occurs when the contraction or relaxation of muscles around the lungs changes the total volume of air within the air passages (bronchi, bronchioles) inside the lungs. When the volume of the lungs changes, the pressure of the air in the lungs changes in accordance with Boyle's Law.

Lungs cannot expand or contract of their own. The contraction and expansion of lungs is brought about by diaphragm muscles and external muscles. These muscles brings about alternate expansion and contraction of thoracic cavity wherein the lungs lie. The intake of fresh air into the lungs is called inspiration or inhalation and elimination of foul air is called expiration or exhalation.

The process of breathing is involuntary, but its rate is under the control of the respiratory centre of brain. An average rate of breathing in a normal adult man is 15 to 18 times per minute. The rate of breathing increase at the time of physical activities because the demand of oxygen increase. The rate of breathing increase upto 20 to 25 times per minute during vigorous physical exercise.
