✍ Refer The Above Diagram For Explaination:

✍ In the diagram , C Represents a compression, R represents a refraction.

✍ consider a long pipe fitted with Piston and filled with air.

✍ Assume that the air is divided into layers.

✍ When the piston is pulled and pushed continuously series of compressions and rarefactions are formed in year and travels along the pipe as shown in the diagram.

✍ The air particles in the pipe do not move along the pipe but they simply vibrate along the direction of propagation of wave.

✍ Hence the waves propagating along the Pipe are longitudinal waves.

MECHANISM OF SOUND WAVE

Longitudinal waves are waves which propagate parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave.

Sound travels in this manner and hence sound waves are longitudinal waves.
