Mixed cropping/
Advantages of Mixed cropping-

Mixed cropping is growing two or more crops simultaneously on the same piece of land. This reduces risk and gives some insurance against failure of one of the crops. Mixed cropping do not allow the growth of weeds. There is no need to pay extra attention to any of the crop as all the crops are of same duration and similar nutrient requirement, so each crops receive equal care.

Disadvantages:-

If the crops are not chosen properly ,there are chances of competition between the crops for nutrients & seondly, it reduces the fertility of soil as many crops are grown in the field at a time.

Inter cropping
Intercropping is the planting of two or more crops simultaneously in the same field in a definite pattern.
For example, cauliflower and chilli plants are grown together in alternating rows. To ensure the maximum utilization of nutrients applied, crops are selected in such a way that their nutrient requirements are different. Other examples include soyabean and maize, finger miller ( bajra ) and cowpea ( lobia ) etc.
Inter-cropping should be practised because of the following reasons-
1. Intercropping gives additional yield income/unit area than sole cropping.
2. It acts as an insurance against failure of crops in abnormal year.
3. Inter-crops maintain the soil fertility as the nutrient uptake is made from both layers of soil.
4. Reduction in soil runoff and controls weeds.
5. Intercrops provide shade and support to the other crop.
6. Inter cropping system utilizes resources efficiently and their productivity is increased (Reddy and Redid, 1992).
7. Intercropping with cash crops is higher profitable.
8. It helps to avoid inter-crop competition and thus a higher number of crop plants are grown per unit area.
