Nitrogen fixing bacteria can "grab" nitrogen from the air and build it in into molecules that plants can use. The bacteria in the root nodules of legumes (Rhizobium spp) can grab that nitrogen from the air and convert it into ammonia. The plant can use that ammonia as its nitrogen source, so the bacteria provide the plant a favor. In return, the plant takes care of the bacteria by providing it with carbohydrates.
