Oxidation is the process in which loss of electrons take place.

Reduction is the process in which gain of electrons take place.

There are cases in which both oxidation and reduction take place. Such a chemical reaction is known as REDOX reaction.

Let us take an example:

\bold{Cu {}^{2 + }  + Mg -  -  -  > Cu + Mg {}^{2 + } }

Here, Cu^2+ is oxidized to Cu and Mg is reduced to Mg^2+
