Explain, p - nitrophenol is less volatile than o - nitrophenol.

p - nitrophenol is less volatile than o - nitrophenol because the o-Nitrophenol makes the intramolecular H bond.


On the other hand, p-nitrophenol molecules get associated through the intermolecular H bond.


At the time of boiling, the boiling point increase due to the strong intermolecular H bonding, but the intramolecular H bonding cannot achieve this.


Because of this o-Nitrophenol remains more volatile than the p-Nitrophenol.
