Clauses:A group of words that had a subject and a finite verb of it's own and makes complete sense is called a clause.

Some clauses may not have subjects, but they will always have a finite verb.

Example:Neena sat on a chair that was made of cane.

Madhu came first in the race, which surprised her friends.

Every sentence is also a clause.when a sentence has only one main clause then the clause itself is the sentence.

Example:I played the violin.

This sentence has one finite verb(played) and consists of only one main clause.

There are two types of clause:

●Independent clause

●Dependent clause

Independent and dependent clause

A clause can be dependent or independent.

Read these sentences.

1.Sarita asked me if I needed her help.

2.I will leave now because it is getting late.

The underline parts of these sentences can stand on their own as independent sentences. However, the highlighted parts of these sentences cannot stand on their own. They have to depend on the rest of the sentence to convey the correct meaning.

A clause that has a finite verb makes complete sense and can stand on it's own is called independent clause. An independent clause is also known as principal clause or the main clause.

A dependent clause is the one that has a subject and a finite verb but does not make complete sense on it's own.It has to depend on the main clause to complete its meaning.A dependent clause is also called a subordinate clause.

Question:Mark the clause as main clauses (MC),coordinate clauses(CC) or subordinate clause(SC) in these sentence.

1.she got the job since no one else applied for it.

2.I like reading, and I enjoy going for long walks.

3.where are the mangoes that she kept kept in the basket?
