Here I am putting the paragraph you highlighted in simple terms:   

There was much excitement around. The hunters ["hunting party"] came in groups of two's and threes. [This means that either two hunters, or three hunters came together. This way all the hunters came in groups of two or three people]. The hunters, as well as their horses and dogs ["hounds"], were really tired and sad, as they weren't able to hunt anything.

Every hunter had at some point claimed that he had seen at least one deer, which had even come very close. The dogs tried to chase them, the hunters tried to aim at the target, but when they fired ["snap of trigger"] from their gun, they didn't find any deer there. 

They were only a little fortunate. Some little boy came and told them that he had seen rabbit tracks [which means he had seen footprints of a rabbit]. 
However, it was eating time, and the hunters soon lost their sadness. They had intended to eat meet deer ["venison"] , but they hadn't been able to hunt any. So instead, they sat down to eat veal [which is flesh of some young calf] 
and roast pig.
