In August 1942, Gandhiji started the 'Quit India Movement' and decided to launch a mass civil disobedience movement 'Do or Die' call to force the British to leave India. The movement was followed, nonetheless, by large-scale violence directed at railway stations, telegraph offices, government buildings, and other emblems and institutions of colonial rule.

In may 1942 , Gandhi spoke at a meeting in Allahabad that "British behavior towards India has filled him with great pain". So a Quit India Resolution passed calling for British withdrawal from India through non-violent  protest. The congress wanted to rule India and so wanted the British to leave and it was followed by a large scale. Two days later British arrested Gandhi and Nehru which caused rioting in India British lost power in some parts of India. Then the British were able to restore power because of taking strict measures including use of machine guns and aerial bombing. they restored their rule at the cost of lives of thousand Indians
