Transverse loading refers to forces that are perpendicular to a structure's long axis. These transverse loads will cause a bending moment M that induces a normal stress, and a shear force V that induces a shear stress.

Normal stress is result of load applied perpendicular to a member .it can be seen that both banding and shear stress will develop.
