The Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus) can breathe with both gills and a lung. African lungfishes (Protopterus) and the South American lungfish (Lepidosiren) breathe with a complex lung and single gills. These fishes need to compulsorily breathe air, as in the contrary they die.

In lung fish gill breathing pre dominates at least some of same of the time namely in times of normal water level when the water is well oxyegenated at such times the fish rises less often to the surface to breathe atmospheric air
