Plants are living organisms that carry out various life processes such as growth ,transportation of materials and photosynthesis for which they need energy. To obtain energy, plants respire too. Each part of the plant respires individually through small openings called stomata. The Stomata consists of two bean shaped cells called guard cells which allow opening and closing of stomata. But woody stems don't respire through stomata, they respire through small openings on their surface called lenticels. Roots of plants also breathe through root hair.

- Plants synthesis sugar [glucose] which is used during respiration to produce energy.
- The glucose molecules breakdown, im the presence of oxygen, to release energy through a step-wise reaction.
- Exchange of gases takes place by the process of diffusion through small openings present on leaf surfaces called stomata.
- The stomata generally open up during the day time and remain closed at night.
- Stomata also help the plants in the process of transpiration.
