Explain Robert Merton's critique on functionalism.

Merton appeared interested in sharpening the conceptual tools to be employed in a functional analysis. Manifest functions are conscious, deliberate and beneficial. Latent functions are unconscious, unintended and beneficial. Dysfunctions are unconscious, unintended and harmful.
