Experimentation and observation :

When he strike alpha particles on thin foil of gold he observed that :

★ Most of fast alpha particles passed straight through the gold foil.

★ Some alpha particles were deflected by the foil by small angles.

★ Very few one out of 12000 particles deflected back.

Conclusion :

★ Most of space inside the atom is empty because most of alpha particles passed through gold foil without deflection.

★ Very few particles deflected from their path indicating that +ve charge of atom occupies very little space.

★ A very few alpha particles deflected back indicating that the mass of an atom is concentrate in a very small volume within the atom.
