Living Things

The term living thing refers to things that are now or once were alive. A non-living thing is anything that was never alive. In order for something to be classified as living, it must grow and develop, use energy, reproduce, be made of cells, respond to its environment, and adapt.

Features

1. Metabolism is a the chemical processes that occur within a living organism in order to maintain life.

2.  Growth is a irreversible increase in mass.

3. Reproduction is a the production of offspring by a sexual or asexual process.

4. Homeostasis is a the tendency towards a relatively stable equilibrium between interdependent elements, especially as maintained by physiological processes.

5. Response to stimuli

6. Cellular composition = the cell is considered the basic unit of life as it is the smallest unit that can carry it out functions of life.

7. Excreation = a product excreted by a living organism or cell.

8. Movement is a when the living organism moves a body part or parts to bring without a change in the position of the organisms. Locomotion is when the movement of a part of the body leads to change in the position and location of the organism.

9. Death is the permanent cessation of all biological functions that sustain a living organism. The remains of a living organism begin to decompose shortly after death.
