Answer:

The ear is a sensory organ that picks up sound waves, allowing us to hear. It is also essential to our sense of balance: the organ of balance (the vestibular system) is found inside the inner ear. It is made up of three semicircular canals and two otolith organs, known as the utricle and the saccule.

Sense Organ : Ear

➔ The Ears perform two sensory Functions, hearing and maintenance of body balance .

Anatomically , the ear can be divided into three major sections called :

•The outer ear

•The middle ear

•The inner ear

The Outer Ear :

Compromises two parts,

1] Pinna - It is oval somewhat funnel shaped, skin - covered flap of elastic cartilage and muscles .It collects sound waves and directs them into the external auditory Canal.

2] External Auditory Canal .

The Middle Ear :

Middle ear is formed of an air filled cavity called tympanic cavity in the temporal bone that opens via the auditory ( Eustachian ) tube into the nasopharynx.

The tympanic membrane seperates the tympanic cavity from external auditory Canal.

There are also +nt ear ossicles which are a flexible chain of three small bones

• The malleus

• The incus

• The stapes

The function of ossicle is to transmit and amplify sound waves across the tympanic cavity from the tympanic membrane to the oval window

( fenesta ovalis ) .

➔The Inner Ear :

It is a delicate irregular organ called membranous labyrinth surrounded by a Bony labyrinth and separated from it by a narrow this perilymphatic space. This space contains a watery fluid called perilymph the membranous labyrinth is filled with another fluid called endolymph

The coiled portion of the Labyrinth is called cochlea it is the main hearing organ.

Internally, it consists of three fluid-filled Chambers or canals.

The middle chamber called Scala media bears an upper membrane,

•The Reissners membrane

•The lower membrane

•The basilar membrane

On the basilar membrane a sensory ridge, the organ of corti is present. Organ of corti consists of hair cells (phonoreceptor ), which beer "hair" at the free surface and have synaptic contacts with the dendrites of neurons at the bases

The tips of "hair" are embedded in the thin elastic membrane called Tectorial membrane

The Inner ear also contains a complex system called a Vestibular Apparatus .The vestibular Apparatus is responsible for the maintenance of balance of the body and posture .
