in 1921, riots were pitched at Nilambur between local moplah Muslims and British soldiers during non-cooperation movement. At tirur,early 10000 moplahs destroyed the police station and seized arms and ammunition. another incident occurred at chauri chaura , a village in Gorakhpur district, 21 policemen were killed after they fired on a political procession. muslims leaders were in arrest. Gandhi were concerned about the increasing level of violence and called off his civil disobedient campaign, which upset many Congress leaders and Muslims especially. it weakened Hindu Muslim unity and also weakened support for the khalifat movement.
