This policy was introduced by Lord Wellesley. It was introduced to bring indian states under British domination. The Nizam of Hyderabad was first to enter this alliance. Later Nawab of Mysore,Awadh and Maratha kingdom also forced to accept it. According to it:
1.the ruler had to acknowledge the British East Indian company as supreme power
.2.He had to allow British forces in his territory and pay for their maintenanc
.3.A British resident would stay in his court.
