Hey friend,
Electrolysis of acidified water...
Electrolyte -
Water acidified with dilute H2SO4.
Electrode -
Inert electrodes [platinum foil]
Reaction at Cathode -
4H+ + 4e- ---> 4H
2H + 2H ---> 2H2
Reaction at Anode -
4OH- - 4e- ---> 4OH
4OH ---> 2H2O + O2
Observation at Cathode -
A colourless and odourless gas which extinguishes the burning splinter with a pop sound.
Observation at Anode -
A colourless and odourless gas when brought in contact with the glowing splinter, splinter glows more brightly.
Note -
*The ratio of hydrogen and oxygen liberated at cathode and anode is 2:1 by volume.
*The current is passed for a longer time for the saturation of gases.
Hope it helps!
