Sodium chloride is an ionic compound which means it has ionic bonds. In ionic bonds the ions are surrounded by their opposites from all sides. Therfore they form bonds from all sides. This diagram shows that Na+ ion has been surrounded by cl- ions and vice versa. The lines represent the ionic bonds.
