Processor (CPU, central processing unit): This is the brain of the computer. It has a major impact on performance. The top two manufacturers of processors are AMD and Intel. Intel is commonly considered to have better design and overall performance; but AMD has a better performance to price ratio, and is plenty powerful enough to play computer games. The processor also utilizes high speed temporary memory in order to further optimize speed.

Motherboard: The motherboard holds everything on it. It supplies voltage to your processor, houses instructions for how to use equipment in the BIOS, and stores information about what is attached to the motherboard in the CMOS. It also usually has an integrated NIC.

NIC: Network interface card, is used to get out to the Internet. It's important to make sure that you have wireless capabilities if you want that. Not all NICs have wireless as an option.

Graphics Card: Many processors come with a built-in GPU (graphical processing unit), but if you want to play games then you may need to buy a graphics card. It does exactly what it sounds like, it handles intense graphics from games and movies on your computer.

Hard Drive: The hard drive stores information for long-term needs. This is where all your pictures, music, and files are saved. You can also have a solid state drive. A hard drive has moving parts and a solid state drive does not. This makes the solid state drive faster, but more expensive .

RAM: Random access memory, stores information for quick access. It's volatile memory and requires constant power supply. When the computer is turned off, the RAM flushes the stored information. RAM is critical for performance and 8GB of RAM is good for gaming.

PSU: Power supply unit, provides power to your computer. You can use a multitude of websites to determine how much power you need supplied to your computer.

Case: The case will usually come with fans put in. Otherwise you'll have to install the fans separately. The tower will have to be large enough for everything to fit. There are multiple sizes, but the three most known are full atx, mid atx, and mini atx. Your motherboard may be a full atx form factor, and a mid atx and full atx tower will hold that. The tower will also have ports, such as USB, microphone, headphone, and ports for a DVD or Blu-ray drive. You'll want to make sure that your motherboard has onboard connectors for those ports to connect.

Cooling: Fans for everything. Graphics cards sometimes have fans. RAM sometimes has fans. The processor and tower will definitely have fans and the heat sink on the processor do not forget the thermal paste. When designing your cooling system, remember that heat rises. So you'll want to pull cold air from the bottom and when it rises as warm air push it out.
