binomial nomenclature was introduced by Carlous Linnaeus.
plant's names follow the rules put forth by ICBN .this council also names new species found.
ICBN does not allow/accept tautonomy i.e. repetition of the same term as genus and species [ ex. Gorilla gorilla ] unlike ICZN.

Binomial nomenclature was introduced by Carolous Linnaeus.

* The name has 2 parts - Generic part and the specific ephithet.
* The Genus name starts with a capital letter.
* The specific ephithet starts with a small letter.
* When written, in texts it is latinized.
* When handwritten, the generic and specific names all underlined separately.
* If a species has more than one varieties , it is also mentioned by putting .var after the specific part .
* The name of the person who first described the species is also mentioned.

Examples:

•Mangifera indica Linn
(here Linn indicates Linnaeus who first described the species)

• Brassica oleracea is a species with many varieties:

→Brassica oleracea var. oleracea ......is wild cabbage
→Brassica oleracea var. capitata f alba...........is cabbage
→Brassica oleracea var. capitata f rubra...........is red cabbage
→Brassica oleracea var. gemmifera.........is brussel sprouts

Sometimes varieties obtained by crossing is mentioned as follows

Fragaria×ananassa ........ is common strawberry which was obtained by a cross between Fragaria virginiana from eastern North America and Fragaria chiloensis, which was brought from Chile.
