Explain the calculation of arithmetic mean in cumulative frequency distribution with an example.

Explanation:

A frequency-curve is a smooth curve for which the total area is taken to be unity. It is a limiting form of a histogram or frequency polygon. The frequency-curve for a distribution can be obtained by drawing a smooth and free hand curve through the mid-points of the upper sides of the rectangles forming the histogram.

Let the frequencies be 3 and 4.

Case I

Since there is no number before the first frequency ( 3 ), it is added to zero

3 + 0 = 3.

So the cumulative frequency in case I is 3.

Case II

Since there is a number befire the second frequency ( 4 ) , it is added to it.

4 + 3 =7.

And hence, 7 is the cumulative frequency in second case.
