Ethnically, Kosovo is over 95% percent Albanian due to the influx of Albanians under Ottoman rule. This was further compounded by the mass exodus of Serbians from Kosovo with the rise of immigrating Albanians in the late 1600s. Around this time as well, the Ottoman-Habsburg War was occurring and with the defeat of the Ottomans came their end to Balkan rule, save for Kosovo who they would dominate for another 200 years.Since the early 1900s, the predominant population in Kosovo was Albanian and overtime they overtook the Serbians in sheer number with Serbians, along with Montenegrins, forming only 30% of the population of Kosovo. Over time, this number would drop to less than 15% with the rise of Serbian emigration to native Serbia along with rising Albanian population. In the end, both Albania and Serbia had strong claims to Kosovo due to its continual history of mass exodus’ and constant changing of hands. The far extremes of both sides claim that they hold the entire right to Kosovo but this can’t be farther from the truth, the immediate concern for independence was born from Slobodan Milosevic’s treatment toward the Kosovars who were Albanian. Ethnic conflict played a huge part in the start of the Kosovo War, it was the predominant reason for the conflict.
In the end, the 700+ year history of the Balkans combined with the mass exodus of numerous ethnicities in the region to other Yugoslav states all culminated into firestarting the Kosovo War.
