By the way, Fe3O4 does not really exist. Iron can have a +2 ferrous or +3, ferric, oxygen is always -2.  

with 4 oxygens at -2, that is -8, 3 irons can not make +8 to balance the compound.  

It is a way of showing that both oxides exist. New nomenclature shows ferrous as iron(II) oxide and ferric as iron(III) oxide. In reality it is a hybrid of both together in a crystal formation.
