The main reason was unsuccessful role of Russia in WW1. Population was tired of war and huge casualties. Popularity of Tzar dropped. So this situation lead to February Revolution, when Nicolaus II resigned. All power went to Provisional government. And in few monthes it was overthrown during October Revolution. As Provisional government failed to properly conduct management either politically or economically. The main reason was much hesitation at time of decision taking when the country needed a strong leadership. So Bolsheviks and Menshiviks by great toll of luck seized power to them. If we put all together than we can tell that either Tzar or provisional government lost trust of Russians (the Tzar the first and few monthes later Provisional government ruled by Kerensky). So it was something like this. 1917 was critical for Russia as it was short of food, the army short of ammunition and many other military staff. Russian army took terrible casualties. So popularity of many leftists parties skyrocketed. Personally i blame the Tzar for disaster of 1917. He lacked flexibility and persistence. As a leader he was weak and he went to abyss with his family and millions of Russians who died as the consequence of Revolutions. As soon Civil war started all over the Russian empire.

Answer:
The immediate causes of social unrest were the military losses and disorder at the front and the food shortages in Petrograd. There the Putilov factory went on strike on 2 March (OS 17 February) 1917, and Petrograd's workers took to the streets.
