Aliphatic hydrocarbons are classified broadly into two main categories: saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Aliphatic hydrocarbons are straight chain organic compounds that are mainly composed of hydrogen and carbon. Saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons contain no multiple bonds (double and triple) between adjacent carbon atoms. These include alkanes such as methane, ethane etc. Unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons contain multiple bonds (double and triple) between adjacent carbon atoms. These include alkenes and alkynes such as ethene, ethyne etc.
