The Greek scientist, Aristotle was one of the first scientists to organize living things. Taxonomy is the science of how living things are grouped together.

Aristotle developed the first classification system, which divided all known organisms into two groups i.e. animals and plants.

He used simple morphological characters to classify plants into trees, shrubs, and herbs. He also divided animals into three groups based on their habitats.

But the classification wasn’t justified. Animals in each group have nothing in common, other than their habitat (except few).

Explain the classification of plants done by the Aristotle?

Aristotle developed the first system of classification of animals. He based his classification system off of observations of animals, and used physical characteristics to divide animals into two groups, and then into five genera per group, and then into species within each genus.

The seven major tracheophyte (vascular) divisions include these:--

1) Lycopodiophyta – clubmosses.

2) Pteridophyta - ferns and horsetails.

3) Pinophyta - conifers.

4) Cycadophyta - cycads.

5) Ginkgophyta - ginkgos.

6) Gnetophyta - gnetae.

7) Magnoliophyta - flowering plants
