Explain the common mistakes committed by children in doing fraction related problems.

Suggest learning activities to rectify such mistakes.

Fraction -

It is a numerical quantity which is not a whole number . It is a tiny part or proportion of something .

For example - 3/4 or 0.75 . while doing fractions we should carefully concentrate on them to ignore common mistakes.


Common Mistakes Committed By Children While  Doing Fractions-

1) Students are unable to identify the difference between numerator and denominator. They committed a common mistake by adding or subtracting denominators also .

For example - 2/8 + 3/8 = 5/16

3/5 - 2/5 = 1/0.

2) Students commonly confused with different types of fraction such as unit fraction , proper and improper fractions , and mixed fraction . They unable to differentiate between two fractions.

3) Students often confused how to change mixed fraction into improper fraction . For example - 2  3/4 is mixed fraction  written as 24/4.

4) They committed common mistakes while doing Multiplication fractions . For example - 2/4 x 3/4 = 6/4.

5) Students got confused how to change the fraction into its reciprocal. For example - 2/8 ÷ 6/4 = 8/2 x 6/4.


Activities To Rectify Such Errors -

Teachers  should teach their students in creative way so that students can understand fractions easily and try to rectify their common mistakes.

Teachers should  use different methods or strategies to teach fractions by using paper foldings, by diagrams , etc .

Teachers should give a clear meaning of different types of fractions such as proper fraction , improper fraction , mixed fraction etc .

Teachers should teach children how to simplify the fraction to its lowest forms. For this , children should learn tables thoroughly.
