Ans:- Vidal-de-la Blache followed the approach of possibilism to study human geography. The possibilism school of thought offers many choices to men. In this approach, emphasis is on man rather than nature and man is seen choosing his needs according to his own culture and is also “The judge of their use”. The French School of Geographers is staunch supporters of possibilism. The main features of this thought are:
(i)Natural environment does not control human life.
(ii)Environment offers some possibilities to man.
(iii)Environment is inert and man is seen as an active force rather than passive one.

The concept of possibilism:

  • Possibilism is part of cultural geography that relates the limitation set by the environment on human beings.
  • Human is part of the culture that is bound by social conditions and norms.
  • Human beings play an active part in the human and environmental partnership.

Examples:

The three examples of Possibilism are Agricultural Advancement, industrial revolution, and Technological revolution.

Explanation:

  • The theory of Possibilism was introduced by the German geographer Alfred Hettner.
  • He believed that human beings have the innate quality of responding to the environment in which they are living and accordingly bring changes to it as per their needs and requirements. The environment plays a major role in society that the person lives.
