The institution of family refers to a relationship between people arising out of blood, marriage or adoption, which supports and encourages their growth mutually.


There are certain general characteristics to be followed by families for their sustenance as an institution.


These features are:


• Institution of family has a universal existence i.e. they have always existed.


• Family has always had a fixed habitat i.e. known as home.


• Family exists on the basis of harmonious existence among its members who bear equal sense of responsibility.

(2) During the pre - independence period, the Institution of family was an important feature of Indian society.

(3) Joint family system was Universal in India and till the end of 20th century.

(4) However industrialization and urbanization lead to the disintegration of the joint family system.

(5) Nuclear family system was given impetus by the globalization.
