It is stated that motion and rest are relative because an object which is at rest can also be in motion simultaneously.
For example;
1. The passengers sitting in a train are at rest with respect to each other but they are also in motion at the objects like trees, boundaries etc.
2. If an observer is at rest in his or her own frame of reference, but he may be moving in other observer's frame of reference.
