(i) The plantation workers were subject to harsh and inhuman conditions.

(ii) The indigo cultivators had to cultivate only indigo in their fields otherwise their crops were destroyed and cattle were taken away as a punishment.

(iii) The workers were rarely fed and had to toil day and night under their masters.

(iv) They were beaten up by their masters frequently.

(v) The workers were not allowed to meet their family and they were also not allowed to step out of the plantation without the prior permission of the masters.

(vi)They had no rights and freedoms ; they had to obey their masters .

(vii) Tea cultivators were not allowed to leave the tea gardens .

(viii) They were not allowed to go to their native place or villages

(ix) They were poorly paid . They did not get the salary they deserved .

Explanation:

• They were forced to stay in the plantation area of the forest by the officials. They were never or rarely permitted to go out and visit their village.
• The plantation workers were not given with proper wages and food.  Women and their children who stuck in the plantation for work were exploited badly.
• There were no end for the torment happened to them. In the name of Inland Emigration act, people from the native land chosen as workers experienced imaginable treatments.
• Workers who tried to escape from the area were beaten up to death. No medical facility was given to the sick and beaten people. Many of the workers who never retained back to their native but passed their life there in the plantation field itself.
