Economic exploitation was one of the main cause of growth of Nationalism in India. The Economic critique of colonialism is aptly been described as Economic nationalism as it united the Indians under one banner to fight the British Raj. Dadabhai Narouji was among the first nationalist leaders who criticized the economic policies of British and put forth the theory of "drain of wealth" in his book "Poverty and Un-British rule in India". He regarded British policies responsible for poverty in India. Similarly R. C Dutt criticized the economic policies of British in his book "Economic History of India" and he highlighted the De-industrialization in India and destruction of Indian arts and crafts.

This critique of economic policies of British realized the Indians that their poverty is due to the presence of British and so the development of India and welfare of Indians is not possible until the end of political subjugation. It also ended the belief of benevolence of British Raj and thus shook the moral foundations of the British Raj in India.
