Sardar Patel was the India’s deputy PM and the home minister during the crucial period immediately following Independence. He played a historic role in negotiating with the rulers of princely states firmly but diplomatically and bringing most of them into the Indian Union.

that's all.

Diplomatic skills and foresightedness of Sardar Vallabhai Patel must be incredibly lauded. He was responsible for amalgamating more than five hundred small states into one unified India and save the states from the despotic authority of British.

Hyderabad, Kashmir and Junagrh did not accede to become the union of India and hence Sardar Patel began his threefold assimilation process. Nawab of Junagarh wanted to support Pakistan but his attempt was broken Indian took over the administration and Patel merged Junagarh with India by holding a referendum and a poll. Nizam also surrendered his administration to Unified India. States ruled by monarchs were asked to surrender the defense and administration to Indian government.

Thus Patel was successful in ensuring the harmony of unified Indian states without any civil war which was appreciated immensely.
