◾ On January 31, 1930 , Gandhi wrote a long letter to the Viceroy Irwin, communicating his decision to start Civil disobedience movement.

◾ On 12th March, Mahatma Gandhi began his historic march from Sabarmati to Dandi, a village on Gujrat sea coast.

◾ He was accompanied by 78 of his trusted volunteers, but later joined by many in the route.

◾ On the morning of 6th April, Gandhi violated the Salt laws by picking up some salt from sea water. Gandhi's campaign against the Salt was a signal to disobey the British government and boosts the freedom struggle in India. The Civil disobedience campaign involved defiance of Salt laws, boycott of liquor, foreign cloth and British items of any kind.
