The cup in the story was made in Czechoslovakia that was attacked by Germany during the Second World War in 1939. Although the cup was with the author, it was originally with the author’s mother who was married at the time of the World War. Even though the War destroyed most of the country and its belongings, the cup remained undamaged. There were many pictures on the cup that gave an insight into the country’s art and history. Thus, the cup is truly a small uncharred detail from the mid-century war that is referred to as a bonfire.
