The Varnam is a musical practice in Carnatic Music. Two types of varnams are there, the Tana Varnam and the Pada Varnam.

Tana Varnam has two angas or sections in a varnam, known as the Purvanga and Uttaranga.

Purvanga includes the pallavi, anupallavi and the muktayi svaras, and the Uttaranga (Ettukadai), includes the charanam and the charana svaras.

The tana varnam has sahityam only for the pallavi, anupallavi and charanam.
