It is important to understand the difference between rotations and revolutions. When an object turns around an internal axis (like the Earth turns around its axis) it is called a rotation. When an object circles an external axis (like the Earth circles the sun) it is called a revolution.

Rotation and revolution, both are circular motions.

When an object is rotating on it's own axis without changing the initial location, the motion of that object is known as the revolution.

But,when an object is rotating in a circular path with constantly changing it's initial location, the motion of that object is known as the rotation.

Similarly, earth is also revolving on it's own axis and also rotating around the sun,at the same time.

And the moon is also rotating in an almost circular path around the earth.
